Morocco plans to continue expansion of its highway network. The country’s Transport Ministry has set a target of 1,800km of highway by 2015. The plan envisages all large towns being connected to the highway network, which currently stretches a total of 916km.
During 2009, 160km of highways were built in Morocco. In 2010 the country is planning work on 384km of highway including the 41km Rabat ring road, the Berrechid-Beni Mellal 172km link, the El Jadida-Sadi 140km link and the Casablanca-Berrechid via Tit Mellil road. Also during 2010, the Marrakech-Agadir motorway is due for completion while in 2011 the Fès-Oujda link is expected to be finished. Morocco is well in hand with its plans for highway construction, which include links through to neighbouring Algeria that will eventually run all the way across North Africa to Egypt. Algeria is also close to completing its East-West highway running from the Moroccan border in the west to Libya and Tunisia in the east and also has further plans for highway expansion. Other North African nations are still working on their highway plans for the route however.
